Why action figures are not just for kids

I’ve had a lot of people wonder how I’ve made a job and business out of action figures. I’ve even had a couple of people tell me to get a real job. But even though action figures are often considered toys for kids, in reality, they have a much broader appeal. I should know. My entire business is based on selling these collectibles to adults of all ages who love them. In the 20 years I’ve been selling and collecting action figures, I’ve talked to people from around the world and I’ve shipped these collectibles to more countries than I can count.

Here are just a few reasons why action figures are not just for kids.

Nostalgia

For many adults, action figures are a source of nostalgia. They sure are for me. They remind us of our childhoods and the characters and stories that we loved. Reconnecting with these characters through action figures can be a fun and comforting experience and can help us feel young again.

Collectibility

Action figures are often produced in limited quantities, making them highly collectible. For collectors, the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of completing a collection can be just as exciting as playing with the figures themselves. Some collectors, like me, even invest in rare or exclusive figures, treating them as valuable works of art.

Creative expression

Action figures can be used for more than just display or collection. I enjoy using action figures as a creative outlet, using them to create dioramas, stop-motion animations, or other forms of artwork. I also like sitting with lots of pieces are parts and just making something to keep my mind off worries. The possibilities are endless, and the only limit is your imagination.

Pop culture fandom

Action figures are often tied to popular movies, TV shows, and comic books, making them a natural choice for fans of these franchises. Collecting figures from your favorite franchises can be a way to show your fandom and connect with other fans. Some of these figures are really expensive, and companies like Hot Toys can make a million different variations on one character (Iron Man, I’m looking at you!), but they are a lot of fun to collect.

Mental health benefits

This is something many of us already know. Action figures can also have mental health benefits for adults. Playing with toys has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve cognitive function, and even increase creativity. For adults who struggle with mental health issues, action figures can be a helpful tool for relaxation and self-expression. Kitbashing sure is helpful for me.

So, take it from someone who knows … action figures are not just for kids. They have a wide appeal among adult collectors, who enjoy them for their nostalgia, collectibility, creative expression, pop culture fandom, and mental health benefits. So if you’re an adult who loves action figures, don’t be ashamed.

Embrace your inner child and enjoy the many benefits that these toys can offer.
